2025-26 Hooded Plover breeding season

Published on 26 March 2026

As the 2025–26 Hooded Plover breeding season draws to a close, we take a moment to reflect on the outcomes across the Bellarine Peninsula and acknowledge the collective effort that supports these vulnerable beach-nesting birds.

Running from August through to March, this year’s breeding season resulted in five chicks reaching fledgling stage across the Bellarine, including one fledgling at Stingray Bay on Barwon Coast–managed land.

Barwon Coast breeding season snapshot 2025–26:

  • 16 nests recorded
  • 48 eggs laid
  • 4 nests successfully reached 28 days
  • 12 chicks observed
  • 1 fledgling at Stingray Bay

While the numbers highlight the challenges Hooded Plovers face, each fledgling represents an important contribution to the survival of this threatened species.

These outcomes would not be possible without the dedication of the Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine volunteers. Across the season, volunteers contribute hundreds of hours to monitoring nesting activity, installing and maintaining signage and exclusion fencing, collecting and recording data, and engaging with beachgoers to help protect nesting sites.

This on-ground effort is supported by a significant amount of behind-the-scenes work, including coordinating volunteers, facilitating training, applying for grants and working collaboratively with land managers across the Bellarine Peninsula.

Barwon Coast extends its sincere thanks to all volunteers for their conservation knowledge, generosity of time and ongoing commitment to protecting Hooded Plovers.

As we move out of the breeding season, we encourage the community to continue respecting wildlife along our coast and sharing the shore with care.
