Hooded Plover chicks thriving and new nests spotted

Published on 16 December 2025

Community care has been fantastic this season, with many people keeping their dogs on-lead and walking close to the water’s edge while nests were in place. Your efforts are helping give these birds the best possible start.

Three Ocean Grove chicks still thriving

With chicks now on the beach between Wedge Street and Tuckfield Street beach accesses, Temporary Exclusion Zones are in place. Declared under the Crown Land (Reserves) Act 1978, these fenced areas must not be entered by people, dogs, or horses until the chicks fledge (expected mid-January). If you need to move between the two beach access points, please use the inland detour and follow the signs.

The chicks at Ocean Grove are currently the only hooded plover chicks on the Bellarine Peninsula, making the community’s support even more important.

New nests

Three new nests have also been spotted:

  • Breamlea – 2 eggs between Vagg Street and Blyth Street beach accesses
  • Barwon Bluff – 2 eggs (same family that lost chicks previously)
  • Bukareeyoo – 2 eggs between RAAFs beach access and the summer SLSC outpost towards Ocean Grove Main Beach

Every small action makes a big difference. Please continue to give the birds space and keep them safe as they grow and take flight.

Please follow this inland detour route to avoid the chicks between Wedge Street and Tuckfield Street accesses
