Upgrades to Collendina beach access stairs to start soon

Published on 20 January 2026

Barwon Coast is upgrading the Collendina (Bonnyvale Road) beach access stairs with support from the Victorian Government’s 2024–25 Coastal Public Access and Risk Grants Program.

The existing stairs are aging and have been impacted by storms and coastal erosion. They will be replaced with a modern, more accessible structure, along with improvements to fencing, pathways and overall access. These upgrades will improve safety for beach users while protecting the surrounding coastal environment.

Extensive planning has been undertaken to ensure the new staircase design is safe, compliant and appropriate for this sensitive coastal location. This work has included engineering and technical assessments, coastal process investigations, and reviews of access standards and relevant legislation. Community feedback gathered through Barwon Coast’s recent Access Audit has also helped shape the design.

The planning process considered the former sand access track near the stairs, which has been closed for some time but continues to be used by some beach users. Technical assessments and audits found that ongoing use of this track is contributing to damage to the dune environment and that the sand access track is not safe or suitable for all users. Expert advice confirms that replacing the stairs is the only option that meets safety and access requirements while also protecting the dune system.

During construction, the Collendina beach access stairs will be closed and some nearby car parks will be unavailable. Please use the Aldebaran Road beach access stairs during this time, as indicated by on-site signage.

Works are expected to start in early February 2026 and be completed by late March 2026, weather permitting. We appreciate the community’s patience while these important safety and access improvements are underway.
