Stingray Bay Hooded Plover chick takes flight

Published on 16 March 2026

There is good news from Stingray Bay at Breamlea, with the Hooded Plover chick now observed taking short flights along the beach.

After several weeks under the watchful care of its parents, the chick has reached an important milestone and is now considered a juvenile. At this stage, the young bird is thought to be largely self-sufficient and will continue to develop its flight strength and life skills over the coming weeks.

The juvenile is expected to remain around Stingray Bay for a short time while it builds confidence and capability before eventually exploring other parts of the coastline on its own.

With this milestone reached, the Temporary Exclusion Zone that was in place to protect the nesting family has now been lifted. The beach closure was revoked today, Monday 16 March 2026, and the beach is once again open for public access.

Barwon Coast would like to sincerely thank the Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine volunteers and members of the community who respected the temporary beach closure and helped give the family the space they needed to thrive. Their care and vigilance play a vital role in protecting this threatened species along our coastline.

Hooded Plovers are one of Australia’s most vulnerable beach-nesting birds, and successful fledging events like this are an important step in supporting their recovery.

Even though the closure has now ended, beach visitors are still encouraged to keep a respectful distance from shorebirds, keep dogs under control where permitted, and stay mindful of wildlife sharing our beaches.
