Update on Surf Bridge North and South beach access tracks

Barwon Coast continues to closely monitor conditions at the Surf Bridge North (Emergency Marker BUK110) and Surf Bridge South (Emergency Marker BUK108) beach access tracks at RAAFs Beach, which remain temporarily closed due to large dune escarpments.
The tracks were closed in early June after erosion created steep dune escarpments that made access unsafe. We appreciate that the closures may be inconvenient for some members of our community, particularly as we move closer to the busy summer season, and thank locals and visitors for their patience.
Monitoring conditions ahead of summer
This is a dynamic section of coastline, shaped by tides, waves, wind and weather, and conditions can change significantly over time.
Our aim is to reopen the tracks before the busy summer season. Where possible, we want to allow natural coastal processes to reshape the area. However, if conditions do not improve sufficiently, we will undertake works to support safe access.
We will continue to regularly assess the tracks and determine whether intervention is required as we move closer to summer. The tracks will only reopen when they can provide safe access to the beach.
RAAFs Beach remains open
Importantly, the RAAFs Beach car parks and the beach itself remain open.
While the Surf Bridge North and South tracks are closed, this section of beach can still be accessed via nearby alternative access points, including:
- The beach access next to the pedestrian bridge (Emergency Marker BUK114 – see it on Google Maps)
- RAAFs Beach access (Emergency Marker BUK105 – see it on Google Maps).
Visitors are asked to respect all fencing and closure signage and use the alternative access tracks.
Planning for a changing coastline
Barwon Coast’s Coastal Hazard Exposure Report, released in February, provides an evidence base for understanding erosion and inundation risks across Barwon Coast-managed land.
Responding to coastal erosion and changing coastal conditions is also considered through the Foreshore Master Plan, which will provide a long-term framework for the management of our coastline.
We’ll continue to keep the community updated as conditions at RAAFs Beach change.

This #PloverAppreciationDay, we’re giving you a glimpse into the Secret Lives of Hooded Plovers.
There’s romance. There’s drama. There are tiny eggs hidden in plain sight. And there are some seriously dedicated parents trying to raise a family on our busy beaches.
Behind the drama is a threatened little shorebird that needs our help. During breeding season, Hooded Plovers nest directly on the sand, making their eggs and chicks incredibly vulnerable to disturbance.
So while you’re following the latest episode of #PloverTV, help give our Hoodies their happily ever after:

🩵 Keep dogs under control and follow local dog regulations
🩵 Walk close to the water’s edge around nesting areas

🌈🦜 Our noisy, colourful, busy neighbours!
You’ll often hear Rainbow Lorikeets before you see them – screeching and chattering as they race overhead .
With their bright red beaks, blue heads, green wings and backs, and orange-yellow breasts, they’re certainly not shy about standing out.
Rainbow Lorikeets are right at home in our coastal and urban landscapes, particularly wherever there are plenty of trees. They spend much of their time among flowering shrubs and trees, feeding on nectar and pollen, as well as fruit, seeds and the occasional insect.
And when the day is done? You might spot – or more likely hear – groups gathering together to roost at dusk.
Noisy, colourful and always busy – we reckon they bring plenty of personality to our coast. 💚

🌿 The Barwon Heads Nature Festival is almost here!
From 21–25 September, Friends of the Bluff are bringing together an amazing program of events celebrating the wonderful natural environment of Barwon Heads. There’s lots to explore, including some fantastic events happening across our coastal foreshore reserves:
🥾 Monday 21 September – Explore Barwon Bluff, plus two Canoe the Mangroves sessions
🌱 Tuesday 22 September – Walk on Country @ Barwon Bluff with @Wadawurrung
🌊 Wednesday 23 September – Orchids in the Park, then Land, Sea, Sky slide night
🔬 Thursday 24 September – Tide & Seek: a family ‘marine science’ day
🧤 Friday 25 September – Barwon Heads Great Spring Clean Up, followed by the Turning the Tide short film festival that evening.

🥚 Hoodie nest update!
We’re pleased to share that there are currently two active Hooded Plover nests – at Blue Rocks and near Signpost at 13th Beach – each with three eggs. 🤞
Hoodies nest directly on the sand, and their tiny, camouflaged eggs can be almost impossible to spot. They’re also easily disturbed, so please give them plenty of space.

🩵 Stay outside fenced or roped-off areas

Species spotlight: Sooty Oystercatchers 🖤❤️
Have you spotted a Sooty Oystercatcher along our coast?
With their striking all-black plumage, long red bill and bright red eyes, these distinctive shorebirds are amazing to spot along our coast – although their dark colour can make them tricky to see against the basalt of our coastal reefs.

🌸 Hello, spring! 🐝
As we welcome a new season, we’re feeling pretty lucky to experience this special stretch of coast in all its seasons.
There’s a lot to love about a coastal winter – wild seas, moody skies, quiet beaches and those crisp, clear days. But we’re also happy to see the first signs of spring appearing across the coastal foreshore.
Coastal plants are starting to flower, warmer days are sneaking in (along with some pretty hectic rain!) and Hooded Plover breeding season is underway once again. Please keep your fingers crossed for a successful season for these vulnerable little birds. 🤞🐦
