Three Hooded Plover chicks hatch at Barwon Bluff South

Published on 5 November 2026

Three Hooded Plover chicks have hatched at Barwon Bluff South today (5 November), marking a positive milestone in this year’s breeding season.

To protect the newly hatched chicks, Barwon Coast is establishing a temporary beach closure between The Bluff Dune South and The Hole beach accesses.

The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately five weeks, until the chicks are able to fly and are considered self-sufficient.

Hooded Plover chicks are particularly vulnerable during their first weeks of life. They leave the nest shortly after hatching and begin searching for food along the beach, making them susceptible to disturbance from people and dogs.

What this means for beachgoers

We ask everyone visiting the area to:

  • Respect the temporary beach closure and follow all signage and barriers.
  • Follow the signed pedestrian detour or visit one of our other beautiful local beaches while the chicks grow.
  • Keep dogs away from the protected area.
  • Give Hooded Plovers plenty of space and avoid disturbing the chicks

Thank you to the Friends of the Hooded Plover – Bellarine volunteers for their ongoing monitoring and dedication to protecting these vulnerable shorebirds.

Hooded Plover protection trial

This breeding season, Barwon Coast is trialling a new three-phase approach to protecting Hooded Plovers at selected two high-risk nesting sites (Barwon Bluff South is not included in the Trial).

The trial aims to improve breeding success while balancing the protection of vulnerable shorebirds with community access to our beaches.

Stay informed about nesting activity

We’ve introduced a dedicated Hooded Plover email update to help community members stay informed throughout the breeding season.

Subscribers will receive updates as news arises, including new nests, chicks hatching, successful fledglings and, unfortunately, occasions when nests or chicks don’t survive.

We’ll also share information about temporary protection measures and beach access changes to help you plan your visits.
