Lobster Pot Renovation Progresses to Next Phase

The Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre, housed in “The Lobster Pot”, is undergoing a significant transformation to enhance its ability to showcase the diverse natural and cultural heritage of the Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, and Lake Connewarre region. This exciting development has been made possible by a $100,000 grant from the Barwon Heads Community Bank through their Legacy Project funding program.

In January 2023, Stage 1 was completed, which involved extensive analysis and early concept design, thanks to an initial $10,000 grant from the Bank, matched by Barwon Coast. There were also updates to the Centre’s displays, highlighting the area’s fascinating geology, plant life, rich history and marine environment. The dedicated team of volunteers, the Friends of the Lobster Pot, have worked diligently to revitalise this valuable community resource which opened its doors to visitors back in 1999.

The latest funding from Barwon Heads Community Bank has enabled the commencement of Stage 2 of the redevelopment. This crucial phase involves detailed design work and construction planning. The designs reflect a beautiful space that is much more accessible for the whole community to utilise, and the aim is to fully renovate the Centre’s interior while maintaining its heritage charm. Alongside updates to the displays, building works and new cabinetry will ensure the preservation of important local stories and artefacts for future generations.

Looking ahead, once funding is secured, Stage 3 will mark the final phase of this ambitious redevelopment project. This phase will see plans come to life and the Centre emerging as a significant asset for the region, to be cherished by locals and visitors alike.

The Lobster Pot has had a varied history, including being used as a dance hall in the 1930’s, a school room in the 1940’s, a scout group’s base in the 1970’s and a caravan park booking office in the 1990’s.

As we move forward with this project, Barwon Coast sincerely thanks the Barwon Heads Community Bank for their visionary support. This investment in the Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre is an investment in our shared environment, heritage and the strength of our community. We also acknowledge the unwavering efforts of the Friends of the Lobster Pot, whose passion and commitment are the driving force behind the Centre’s transformation.

We will provide further updates as the Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre continues its remarkable journey of transformation. In the meantime, you can see the unique and wonderful specimens and displays every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm for yourself.
