Barwon River entrance – sand movement and safety update

Published on 12 March 2026

Further to Notice to Mariners 146-2026, we wanted to share more information around the Barwon River bar.

Barwon Coast is working closely with the Department of Transport and Planning and Safe Transport Victoria to manage the current sandbar conditions. Based on historic hydrographic survey records held by Barwon Coast, the entrance channel alignment has remained largely consistent since 1984, and all navigational aids are positioned in accordance with the most recent surveys.

Prolonged south east wind and swell conditions over the last 6-12 months have moved sand into the river mouth. Combined with limited downstream flows from the Barwon River, this has led to the build-up of sand currently affecting depths at the bar.

In the meantime, temporary buoys will be installed to help guide vessels through the river entrance. These will be an interim measure while we continue to monitor how the river system adjusts. The buoys are expected to be implemented following the results of the latest hydrographic survey and will depend on contractor availability and weather conditions – we’re working to have them in place as soon as possible. Please note that no dredging works are planned now or in the future.

Navigational aids currently mark safe water approximately 1.5 hours either side of high tide during daylight hours, and only in conditions of low swell and light winds. Mariners are strongly advised to remain within the marked channel due to reef outcrops and other hazards.

We appreciate everyone’s patience while these changes are managed. Most importantly, we want everyone heading out on the water to make informed decisions and return home safely.
