Celebrating Plover Appreciation Day – protecting our Hooded Plovers

Published on 16 September 2025

Today is Plover Appreciation Day, a chance to recognise these remarkable ground-nesting birds and highlight the work being done to protect them.

Plovers – including our much-loved Hooded Plovers (or “Hoodies”) – lay their eggs directly in the sand above the high tide line. Their nests are so well camouflaged that they’re easy to miss, making them extremely vulnerable to disturbance from beachgoers, off-lead dogs, predators, and high tides. With fewer than 750 Hooded Plovers left along Victoria’s entire coastline, every successful nest matters.

Hooded Plovers, Red Cap Plovers and Masked Lapwings are to be found on our beaches all year round with the Migratory Double Banded and Pacific Plover returning each year to our beaches.

Barwon Coast works with BirdLife Australia, volunteers, and partner organisations to help these birds survive. Each breeding season (August to March), our team monitors nests, installs protective fencing and signage, restores dunes and coastal vegetation, and educates beach users about sharing the shore. These small actions help give chicks the best chance to grow and fledge.

You can play a vital role too:

  • Keep dogs on-lead when visiting the beach
  • Stay near the water’s edge to avoid nesting areas
  • Respect fences and signage that protect active nests

Together, we can give these tiny, endangered birds a fighting chance.
