About the role
We are seeking a Senior Open Space Officer to lead and enhance the maintenance and development of Barwon Coast’s reserves and caravan parks.
In this key leadership role, you will supervise a small team of horticulturists, ensuring the effective delivery of open space management initiatives.
This role is vital in improving our open spaces while supporting strategic objectives in line with the Coastal and Marine Management Plan 2020–2025.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise a small team of horticulturists, providing leadership and guidance to achieve planned outcomes.
- Collaborate with the Open Space Coordinator to plan and execute the annual works program.
- Implement programs such as the Arboriculture Inspection Program and coastal reserve maintenance.
- Undertake and oversee daily maintenance tasks, including planting, tree care, landscaping, mowing, track and fence maintenance, rubbish management, spraying weeds, and cleaning.
- Train and mentor Coastal Rangers to build team capacity.
- Assist with supervising the day-to-day operations of the Open Space team.
- Source and manage contractors for reactive and scheduled works.
About you
To thrive in this role, you’ll bring:
- Hands-on experience in gardening, horticulture, and weed control (including spraying).
- Leadership skills to supervise and support a small team of horticulturists effectively.
- Skills to safely operate horticultural equipment and machinery.
- A customer-focused approach, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A collaborative mindset, working respectfully with team members to achieve shared goals.
Essential Qualifications
- Certificate in Horticulture or Parks and Gardens (or equivalent experience).
- Valid driver’s license (manual preferred).
Desirable Skills
- Agricultural Chemical User’s Permit (ACUP).
- Heavy Rigid (HR) License.
- Experience addressing minor maintenance issues.
- Certifications in areas such as front-end loader operation, chainsaw use, and farm chemical handling.
- A customer service ethos, with the ability to navigate challenging situations professionally.
