Barwon Coast will soon carry out essential work on a Moonah tree at the Barwon Heads Caravan Park to ensure the safety of the community, campers, and staff.
Located at the entrance to the Caravan Park, the tree has been a point of concern for some time. Barwon Coast has been closely monitoring it to ensure it remains safe.
Over time, proactive measures such as pruning, canopy reduction, and regular independent arborist inspections have been implemented to support and extend its health and stability.
Arborist assessment and planned works
A recent independent arborist assessment has confirmed that the tree’s structural integrity is compromised, making significant pruning necessary in the coming weeks. The planned works will involve removing two trunks, which have been deemed high risk by the arborist, while retaining the main trunk.
Additionally, an aerial inspection will be conducted to assess the health of the remaining trunk.
This approach will allow the iconic tree to remain in the park, ensuring the safety of the community, campers, and staff.
Cultural and environmental considerations
Barwon Coast has consulted with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners regarding these necessary works.
To support the long-term presence of this important species, five new Moonah trees will be planted within the coastal reserve managed by Barwon Coast. This initiative will help preserve and enhance the local environment as part of our ongoing commitment to caring for the coast.
We understand these changes may raise concerns, but we want to reassure the community that we take our responsibility for safety seriously and approach it with great care. We appreciate your support as we work to balance safety with environmental conservation.
