Hooded Plover chicks take their first steps at Barwon Bluff South

Published on 6 November 2025

We’re thrilled to share that a Hooded Plover nest located between Barwon Bluff South and The Corner, 13th Beach, has successfully hatched two tiny chicks!

But these tiny beach-nesting birds need our help to survive. With only around 2% of chicks making it to adulthood, they’re incredibly vulnerable to tidal changes, predators like foxes and other birds, foot traffic in sensitive dunes, and dog disturbance.

To give them the best chance, a new temporary exclusion zone is now in place between Barwon Bluff South and The Corner, 13th Beach. As the Corner beach access stairs are closed for replacement works, please use the Hole Staircase to access the 13th Beach side.

Please:

  • Follow signs and avoid exclusion zones
  • Keep dogs leashed and out of exclusion areas
  • Walk close to the water’s edge

Every small action helps protect these vulnerable coastal birds and ensures they have the space they need to grow strong and take flight.
