Hooded Plover nest hatches

Hooded Plover chicks hatch at Stingray Bay, Breamlea

We’re so very excited to share some wonderful news – at least one egg in the Hooded Plover nest at Stingray Bay, Breamlea has hatched, and we now have one tiny chick sighted on the beach.

This is a special and very vulnerable time for the new family. Hooded Plover chicks are small, fast-moving and rely on camouflage rather than flight to stay safe, which means they need plenty of space and calm while they grow.

Temporary Exclusion Zones now in place

Now that the chicks have hatched, Temporary Exclusion Zones have been implemented and declared under the Crown Land (Reserves) Act 1978. These fenced areas must not be entered by people or dogs while the chicks are on the beach (expected until mid-March).

Beach access changes at Breamlea

To help protect the chicks, the western and central beach access points at Breamlea Caravan Park are closed for this period.

The following alternative beach access options remain open:

  • Bancoora Beach
Access via the main entrance, or from the caravan park via the track at the eastern-most point of the park.
  • Breamlea Beach
Access via the Vagg Street Beach Access track, as shown on the map below, or any of the other Breamlea Beach access tracks.

Thank you for helping us look after these tiny, vulnerable birds. By giving them space now, we’re giving them the best possible chance to grow strong and fledge safely.

Please join us in wishing this new Hooded Plover family good luck over the weeks ahead.
