Hooded Plover update – two new nests at Thirteenth Beach

Published on 15 October 2026

Great news for our vulnerable little Hooded Plovers, with two new nests identified at Thirteenth Beach!

Even better, the existing nest at Bluff South Dune (The Corner) is still in place, giving us plenty of reasons to be hopeful as the breeding season continues.

Our coastal team and dedicated volunteers are keeping a close eye on nesting activity across the coast, with three additional sites showing signs of potential nesting.

Latest nesting activity

Active nests

  • Thirteenth Beach – Boings: 3 eggs
  • Thirteenth Beach – The Ant: 1 egg
  • Bluff South Dune – The Corner: Existing nest remains in place

Potential nesting activity

We’re also monitoring three scrapes – shallow depressions in the sand where Hooded Plovers may be preparing to lay eggs – at:

  • Bancoora – Black Rock
  • Thompson Creek – Vagg Street
  • Ocean Grove/Collendina – Wedge Street to Tuckfield Street

Help give our Hoodies the best chance

Hooded Plovers nest directly on the sand, making their eggs and chicks extremely vulnerable to disturbance from people, dogs and other threats.

If you’re visiting our beaches, please:

  • Keep your distance from nesting areas and follow all temporary signage and restrictions.
  • Keep dogs on lead where required.
  • Give Hooded Plovers plenty of space, particularly during nesting and when chicks are present.
  • Stay alert – their tiny, well-camouflaged eggs can be almost impossible to spot!

Every little action helps give these threatened shorebirds a better chance of successfully raising their chicks.

Thank you to the dedicated Friends of the Hooded Plover – Bellarine volunteers and everyone in our coastal community helping to protect these precious little birds.
