Hooded Plover update: Breamlea and Ocean Grove

Published on 16 February 2026

We’re sharing a brief update on Hooded Plover activity at Stingray Bay (Breamlea) and Ocean Grove.

Stingray Bay

Both of the Hooded Plover chicks were sighted at Stingray Bay (Breamlea) during monitoring today. Hooded Plover chicks are extremely well camouflaged and can be very difficult to spot, even when nearby. The chicks are eight days old today.

Since the chicks hatched last Sunday, six Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine volunteers have been onsite providing education to beachgoers, with increased monitoring over the weekend. We thank these volunteers for their time, care and dedication to protecting these vulnerable shorebirds.

Unfortunately, we also received a report yesterday that the second nesting pair previously at Stingray Bay has lost their nest (cause unknown).

Ocean Grove

A Friends of the Hooded Plover Bellarine volunteer checked the nesting pair between Wedge and Tuckfield Street beach accesses early this morning and confirmed both birds are still present and incubating. This nest is expected to hatch in early March.

The Stingray Bay beach closure remains in place to protect nesting birds and chicks. Please follow all signage, keep dogs out of closed areas, and give shorebirds plenty of space.
