Increased mosquito activity across the region

Published on 6 October 2026

Barwon Coast is aware of increased mosquito activity across the Bellarine and broader Geelong region following an unusually early start to the mosquito breeding season.

Higher mosquito numbers are being reported across the region, with recent rainfall, tides and warmer temperatures creating favourable breeding conditions.

Mosquito management across the region is led by the City of Greater Geelong through its mosquito management program. Barwon Coast is in close contact with the City as it continues monitoring and treatment activities across the region.

The City’s program includes monitoring mosquito numbers and species, as well as targeted ground and aerial drone treatments to manage mosquito larvae before they emerge as adults.

We understand the increased mosquito activity is frustrating for residents, visitors and businesses, particularly in coastal areas. We encourage everyone spending time outdoors to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, including wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing and using mosquito repellent containing DEET or Picaridin.

Residents can also help reduce breeding around their properties by removing stagnant water, regularly emptying water from pots and bird baths, clearing gutters and maintaining gardens.
