Spring on the Coastal Paths

Published on 8 September 2025

Spring flowers that can be found in teh local area

Wander along the coastal paths around Barwon Heads and you will see Coast Twin Leaf brightening up the Bluff with its buttercup-sized yellow flowers. Look for it sprawling on the ground or draped across other vegetation. The Y-shaped leaves appear in ‘twin’ pairs.

Along the coastline, Bower Spinach is thriving too – its fleshy green leaves and tiny star-shaped yellow flowers are a common sight right across the reserve. This plant is useful for stabilising sand dunes. The Bower Spinach has succulent red berries that are popular with many birds and lizards.

Just beginning to bloom is the Coast Beard Heath, a hardy plant found along the entire stretch of the coastal reserve, it is now showing its delicate feathered white flowers, which attract honeyeaters. The shrub is named ‘beard heath’ due to the dense beard of hairs on the petals.

Take a walk, breathe in the sea air, and see what new life you can spot this season. If you would like to learn more about the different native plant communities on the Bellarine Peninsula, you can download a PDF copy of ‘Coastal Plants of the Bellarine Peninsula’ from Friends of the Bluff .

The pocket sized booklet was updated and reprinted by the Bellarine Catchment Network and Bellarine Landcare group, and funded by Coastcare Victoria.
