Whale fossil on Ocean Grove Main Beach

Published on 2 March 2026

A remarkable 20+ million-year-old fossil discovery was carefully extracted by Museums Victoria last week from Ocean Grove Main Beach.

The coastline under our care is rich in cultural heritage, and this fossil is a truly significant and exciting find. We were proud to support Museums Victoria and Traditional Owners to carefully and respectfully remove the fossil so it can be protected for the future.

The extraction was a positive, collaborative effort, and it means the fossil can now contribute to scientific understanding for many years to come. Our team supported Museums Victoria on the day by assisting with logistics, equipment, heavy machinery and on-ground support.

Members of the public stopped to observe the works, with many choosing to remain and watch the extraction process, reflecting a shared sense of interest and pride in a moment of local significance.

This discovery is a powerful reminder that coast is a living cultural landscape, shaped over millions of years, holding rich histories of people, animals and plants that have existed here long before us. We hope this moment inspires continued care and respect for this special environment.

The fossil is now safe in the care of Museums Victoria, where it can continue to tell its story and contribute to science.
