Hooded Plover update – two active nests

Published on 26 October 2026

It’s been a busy start to the Hooded Plover breeding season, with nesting activity continuing along our coastline.

While we’re pleased to report that two nests remain active, unfortunately, two other nests have been unsuccessful.

Latest nesting activity

Active nests

  • Barwon Bluff South Dune – Nest remains active, with eggs expected to hatch in just over a week.
  • Wedge Street/Tuckfield Street, Ocean Grove – Nest remains active.

Unsuccessful nests

  • 13th Beach – Boings Beach Access
  • 13th Beach – The Ant (Horse Shorebird Beach Access)

While unsuccessful nests are disappointing, they highlight just how vulnerable these little shorebirds are during their breeding season.

Beach closures expected as chicks prepare to hatch

The Barwon Bluff South Dune nest is expected to be the first to hatch, in just over a week.

As the eggs approach hatching, additional temporary protection measures will be introduced, including beach closures to give the chicks the best possible chance of survival.

Hooded Plover chicks leave the nest shortly after hatching and spend several weeks feeding along the beach before they can fly. During this time, they’re particularly vulnerable to disturbance from people, dogs and other threats.

We ask everyone to follow temporary signage, keep dogs away from protected areas and give these vulnerable birds plenty of space.

Help us protect our Hooded Plovers

Our dedicated coastal team, alongside the wonderful volunteers from Friends of the Hooded Plover – Bellarine, continues to monitor nesting activity and put protections in place where needed.

You can help by following signage, respecting temporary exclusion zones and keeping your distance from nesting birds and chicks.
