About the project
Barwon Coast is progressing plans to deliver seven new cabins at Barwon Heads Caravan Park, including one fully accessible cabin.
The project will enhance the visitor experience and provide more opportunities for people to explore and enjoy the coast, while also supporting Barwon Coast’s broader purpose of caring for coastal Crown land.
The cabins were identified in the 2023 Caravan and Camping Parks Master Plan, informed by a six-week community consultation process that included drop-in sessions, camper briefings and a public survey.
The proposed cabins will be located near the park entrance, in line with the Master Plan.
Construction update: all seven cabins now on site
Another exciting milestone for the new cabin project at Barwon Heads Caravan Park – all seven new cabins are now on site.
With the cabins in position, our focus has shifted to completing the final installation works, including service connections, decking and other finishing works across the new cabin precinct. The cabins are expected to be ready to welcome their first guests later this month.

About the cabins
The project includes seven new cabins, including one fully accessible cabin designed to support a broader range of visitors to enjoy a coastal holiday experience.
All cabins incorporate sustainability and accessibility features. Design development is being undertaken in collaboration with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation to help reflect Wadawurrung Country and is guided by the ‘Creating Connection: Places & Spaces Access Audit’ released last year.
Construction of the cabins is being undertaken offsite to help minimise disruption to caravan park visitors and the community.
Work is commencing shortly to upgrade water, power and sewer to the site. This will result in periods of disruption at the entrance to the park, including full closures for short periods, as trenching and boring are required to upgrade the services at the location.
Once operational, revenue generated from the cabins will be reinvested directly into maintaining and improving the coastal Crown land managed by Barwon Coast, including public infrastructure and caravan and camping facilities.
Supporting tourism and the regional economy
The new cabins will increase guest capacity during peak periods, helping support local tourism and encouraging longer stays in the region.
The project is generating current and future employment opportunities including design and construction roles, and following completion, additional staff hours to manage the accommodation.
Funding
The Barwon Heads Caravan Park cabin project is supported by the Victorian Government through the Regional Tourism Investment Fund 2024, alongside a significant contribution from the Barwon Coast Committee of Management.
The Regional Tourism Investment Fund supports innovative tourism infrastructure that attracts more visitors to regional Victoria and encourages longer stays.
The City of Greater Geelong estimates that in 2024-25, Barwon Coast Caravan Parks injected $71.1M revenue into the local economy ($39.2M direct revenue and a further $31.9M indirect revenue due to supply-chain and consumption impacts), supported 265 local jobs and $17.9M in wages and salaries and boosted local value-added or GRP by $33.3M.
Approvals and next steps
Marine and Coastal Act consent has been provided by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA).
A planning permit has been issued by the City of Greater Geelong.
The new cabins are proposed to be operational in the second half of the year.

From 21–25 September, Friends of the Bluff are bringing together an amazing program of events celebrating the wonderful natural environment of Barwon Heads. There’s lots to explore, including some fantastic events happening across our coastal foreshore reserves:

🧤 Friday 25 September – Barwon Heads Great Spring Clean Up, followed by the Turning the Tide short film festival that evening.

🥚 Hoodie nest update!
We’re pleased to share that there are currently two active Hooded Plover nests – at Blue Rocks and near Signpost at 13th Beach – each with three eggs. 🤞
Hoodies nest directly on the sand, and their tiny, camouflaged eggs can be almost impossible to spot. They’re also easily disturbed, so please give them plenty of space.

Species spotlight: Sooty Oystercatchers 🖤❤️
Have you spotted a Sooty Oystercatcher along our coast?
With their striking all-black plumage, long red bill and bright red eyes, these distinctive shorebirds are amazing to spot along our coast – although their dark colour can make them tricky to see against the basalt of our coastal reefs.

🌸 Hello, spring! 🐝
As we welcome a new season, we’re feeling pretty lucky to experience this special stretch of coast in all its seasons.
There’s a lot to love about a coastal winter – wild seas, moody skies, quiet beaches and those crisp, clear days. But we’re also happy to see the first signs of spring appearing across the coastal foreshore.
Coastal plants are starting to flower, warmer days are sneaking in (along with some pretty hectic rain!) and Hooded Plover breeding season is underway once again. Please keep your fingers crossed for a successful season for these vulnerable little birds. 🤞🐦

We have Hooded Plover nest lift-off! 🥚
We have discovered this little nest on 13th Beach (Black Rock end) and are hoping to see a little family here in around four weeks` time. Our keen-eyed staff have also noticed scrapes (Hoodies usually lay their eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand) at Stingray Bay, Breamlea, and near @13thbeachslsc - exciting!
When enjoying the coast, beachgoers are asked to help protect this nest by:
🩵 Walking close to the waterline
🩵 Keeping well clear of fenced or roped-off areas
🩵 Keeping dogs on-lead and away from sensitive dune areas
🩵 Giving the birds plenty of space so they do not abandon their eggs

🏡 The final two cabins are arriving!
The last two cabins for our new cabin precinct at Barwon Heads Caravan Park are due to arrive late tonight, Tuesday 25 August.
The cabins will be parked along Jetty Road overnight before being moved into position tomorrow morning.
To allow this to happen safely, the main caravan park entrance will temporarily close for a couple of hours, with guest vehicle access redirected via the temporary Bluff Road entrance.
There may also be temporary parking restrictions and delays along Jetty Road while the cabins are manoeuvred into position.
